Safety First!

As we all know, there is no better feeling than being able to live comfortably in your own environment. Your safety is very important to us. There are a few tips we would like to share to make sure you’re safe and secure.

Don’t forget to lock your doors (if you lose your keys, let us know as soon as possible)
Know emergency contact numbers (resident assistants, campus police, etc.)
Store valuables in a safe location (keep a log of important serial numbers or even invest in a small trunk)
If you see something strange, report it.
Walk in lighted areas (if you have to go somewhere at night, ask a buddy to tag along as well)

Guillory Hall Closing Soon

Guillory Hall was built in 1957 as a part of the Student Center. Named after Isom J. Guillory, it was also referred to as the Memorial Student Center. The hall, located next to Cypress Lake, has a computer lab and study area for students. There is also a snack bar located inside as well. Due to the renovations taking place on campus, Guillory Hall will be closed starting February 15, 2012. Until it reopens, students are encouraged to use other labs and study areas such as the Library and Conference Center.

University Art Museum

What would life be like without art? The Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum displays regional, national, and international art exhibitions. The art museum is open to
the public for a small fee and free for UL students, staff, and faculty with a valid I.D. It is also free for children five and under. The museum offers youth activities such as Toddler Tuesdays and Wonder Wednesdays. Stop by and take advantage of the wonderful world of art!

Make Your Room Feel More Like “Home”

Do you want to leave home without your favorite blanket? Should you pack it along with the rest of your items when moving onto campus? Your residence hall becomes your home away from home. Why not make it your comfort zone? There are many ways that you can decorate your room to give it that personal touch.

Being creative is the best way to decorate your room. This reflects your style. Whether you use colorful crates for storage, memo boards to keep up with your daily activities, or hang a collage with photos of your friends back home, decorating should be fun and inexpensive. Check with your roommate for ideas as well. You wouldn’t want something that you both cannot agree on. Make the best of your on-campus experience by showing a creative style of your own.

UL History Fact

UL was originally named the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (SLII) in 1900. In 1921, the name was changed to the Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI). This occurred when it became one of the state’s institutions for higher learning. As the institute began to grow and started offering four-year courses, the name changed again. In 1960, it was renamed the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL). In 1999, the University of Southwestern Louisiana became known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Dorm Diaries Resident Spotlight

Lacee Lege, Legacy Park resident

Let’s introduce you to some valued members of our on-campus community here at UL. “Dorm Diaries” is the UL Housing Blog’s spotlight article featuring different campus residents and some fun facts about them.

Legacy Park resident Lacee Lege is in her junior year of nursing, and she is from Abbeville, Louisiana. Lacee’s favorite TV show is “The Big Bang Theory” and her favorite musical artist is Adele.

When asked what she likes about UL as a campus and as a university, she replied, “It is good ole down south hospitality and competition that brings us all together. I mean come on…we have a swamp!”

I asked her what her funnest memory of living on-campus was. ”SPLATTERBEAT! It was upbeat, fun, and had an awesome turn-out… Throwing paint at people in and of itself is super fun. I thoroughly enjoyed sliding around on a tarp avoiding the inevitable epic fail.” Splatterbeat was a paint/techno party put on by the Residence Hall Association for the first time this past November, and they intend to host it again next Fall.

I asked her what she would say to an incoming resident to UL. “I suggest it 100%! For someone like me, independence is what you are striving for from the very second you leave the nest. Sure, you have roommates; but there is nothing like being responsible for yourself and learning the hard way that clothes and dishes don’t wash themselves. And waking up at 7:45am for an 8 o’clock class across campus isn’t the wisest thing in the world. Learning to take care of yourself is easily done in such a setting as on-campus living. Other than that, it’s wicked awesome knowing that you have your own place to turn to when campus closes and you live far away from home.”

Did you know that the first dormitory built on campus was Foster Hall in 1902? That’s right, the building that now houses the financial aid offices. It was named after Governor Murphy J. Foster. Foster Hall was originally a female dormitory. In 1905, DeClout Hall replaced Foster Hall, housing the female residents.

No Parking on Tulane Avenue

Paint the Quarter Red! – Getcha Tickets!

The Ragin’ Cajuns will be going to their first bowl game in 41 years, representing the Sun Belt Conference versus the Aztecs of San Diego State University. The news was announced on Monday, November 21 at the Cajuns’ indoor practice facility, and tickets are already starting to go fast. Unfortunately your Cajun Card does not get you into the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, so you will have to purchase a ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the Ragin’ Cajuns Box Office at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field (337-851-2011) or the Cajundome Box Office (337-265-2357). Tickets may also be purchased online at ragincajuns.com.

Kickoff will be on December 17 at 8:00 P.M., and hotel rooms in New Orleans are also booking up fast. Don’t forget to WEAR RED!
